Customizing Surgery For Your Needs The Types of Rhinoplasty
There are two rhinoplasty techniques Dr. Kishinevsky typically utilizes at her surgical center serving Norwalk, Bridgeport, and beyond:
Open Rhinoplasty
Open or external rhinoplasty involves a small incision across the strip of nasal tissue dividing the nostrils, referred to as a columellar incision. With open rhinoplasty, the surgeon has better visibility and access to the bone and cartilage. The procedure is usually chosen when revising complex nasal deformities or making more drastic changes to the bone structure. While the risk of cartilage distortion is minimal, there is a slight chance of visible scarring with external rhinoplasty.
Closed Rhinoplasty
With closed or endonasal rhinoplasty, Dr. Kishinevsky makes small incisions within the nose, where they will heal without visible scarring. This minimally invasive procedure is effective in achieving the desired results in most patients with straightforward cases. Due to the surgeon's visual limitations, the skin is prone to more intense stretching, which can result in cartilage distortion. However, the lack of a columellar incision allows for a faster operation and reduced swelling during the recovery period.

Is Rhinoplasty Right for You?
There are other factors besides functional and aesthetic issues we must consider before deciding if nose surgery is right for you. Additional considerations include:
Age
Rhinoplasty is typically not performed until a patient has reached adulthood and the nose has fully developed.
Overall Health
Surgery is never recommended for patients who are in poor overall health or suffer from a serious illness.
Expectations
It is important that candidates for plastic surgery have realistic, clear expectations for the outcome of the procedure.
Recovery Time
Candidates must be able to take some time off of work to recover and limit strenuous physical activity in the weeks following surgery.
The Rhinoplasty Treatment Timeline

"Rhinoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure. Most patients can return home to recover the very same day."
Rhinoplasty Recovery
Compared to many other cosmetic procedures, post-surgical discomfort following rhinoplasty is minimal. Here is what you can expect during your recovery:
Bandages
You will need to wear a splint and bandages to protect your nose while it begins to heal. After approximately one week, you will return to Dr. Kishinevsky's office to have the binding and nasal packing removed, as well as your progress evaluated.
Side Effects
You can expect some bruising, swelling, and tenderness in the weeks following your surgery. We can prescribe pain medication to help you with discomfort, especially in the first week.
Activity
While you should refrain from activities in which your nose could be traumatized in any way, you can resume light activity about a week after surgery. However, do not resume strenuous activity or exercise routines until given permission by Dr. Kishinevsky. This permission is typically given around four to six weeks post-operation.

Your Rhinoplasty Results
While initial swelling from the procedure should fade within a few weeks, it may take up to a year before you see the final results of your surgery. This is especially true if you and Dr. Kishinevsky opt for an open-technique rhinoplasty. During the recovery period, you should notice gradual changes as the swelling continues to subside.
Aging can have an effect on the results of your procedure, but the changes made during rhinoplasty should remain relatively consistent as time passes. It is important to maintain proper sun protection and a healthy lifestyle to prevent changes to the new appearance of your nose.
